Our Story

The short version of why this desk exists, how entries are written, and where our responsibility ends.

01

Why this guide exists and who it is written for

Onyx Getaway began from a simple observation: travellers comparing hospitality in Canada often face either sparse listings or copy that tries to close a sale before it has finished describing the place. We wanted a quieter middle ground — enough context to understand a property’s setting and character, without inventing urgency or dressing up a brochure as journalism.

The guide is written for adults who plan with intention. You may already know which city or shoreline interests you; you may simply want a structured way to read several casino hotels and resorts side by side. In either case, the pages here are meant to be read slowly, then left behind when you move to an official listing.

We assume you can judge a stay for yourself once the facts are arranged clearly. That is why the tone stays measured. Adjectives earn their place only when they clarify landscape, category or architecture — not when they inflate expectation.

If you arrive looking for a booking engine, you will not find one. If you arrive looking for a calm portrait of how certain Canadian properties sit in their cities and waterfronts, you are in the right place.

02

How properties are described — the same categories applied to every entry

Every property in the guide is introduced with the same building blocks: its given name, its city and province, its category and star class, and a short description shaped by the setting facts we hold for that address. Waterfront, countryside, city hotel, resort and historic character appear in the prose when they belong to the entry — never as decorative tags for their own sake.

We keep the length of each card similar on purpose. A louder paragraph does not mean a better hotel; it usually means a less disciplined writer. By holding each description to a narrow word range and the same sequence of facts, we make it easier to compare places without one entry shouting over another.

What we leave out is as important as what we include. Room counts, named restaurants, spa claims, awards and opening years stay off these pages unless they were supplied as part of the fixed data for an entry — and in this collection, they were not. The result is a thinner portrait, but an honest one.

Catalog pages then group those portraits by editorial angle — waterfront stays in one place, a rotating set of highlights in another — so you can browse by mood of place rather than by invented score.

What this site does not do: no bookings, no payments, no availability, no ranking

Onyx Getaway does not take reservations. We do not hold rooms, collect deposits, process cards or confirm stays. There is no calendar on these pages pretending to check inventory, and no button that implies a room is waiting for you here.

We also do not publish packages, seasonal offers or stay figures. Those figures change, and they belong to the operator or the platform you use next — not to an editorial desk that has never seen your dates. When a card sends you to an official listing, that is where time-sensitive detail lives.

Nor do we rank the properties we describe. Featured Highlights is a rotating selection for information, not a podium. Presence on By the Water means the shoreline matters to the stay; it does not mean we have judged one waterfront better than another.

If something on this site ever sounded like a promise of a room, a special offer or a place in a league table, that would be a failure of our own rules. The correct next step is always the official listing, read on its own terms.

Independence — no affiliation with, endorsement by, or sponsorship from any property named here

Naming a hotel is not the same as partnering with it. Onyx Getaway is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by or operated by any hospitality provider described on these pages. Trade names remain the property of their owners and appear here only so you can recognise the place being discussed.

We do not accept placement fees for inclusion in a catalog, and we do not rewrite an entry to flatter an operator. Corrections that improve factual accuracy are welcome through Reach the Desk; requests to soften an independent description are not how this guide works.

Independence also means we do not speak for the properties. Guest services, house rules, access to adult-only areas and everything else about an actual stay are decided by the provider under its own policies and under local law.

The notice beneath our header repeats this stance on every page for a reason. It is easy to skim past; it is harder to misunderstand once you have read it. We are a guide. The stay, if you choose one, happens elsewhere.
